In 1980, William O'Neil and George Meek built the spiricom apparatus to communicate with the spirits of the deceased. Stranger still is that O'Neil claims to have gotten assistance in the radio-like device's development via psychic interaction with Dr. George Mueller who had died in 1967.

Exploring this fusion of technology and otherworldly communion, Opening the Portal experiments with the visceral and ethereal. It represents the tingling anticipation of first contact with a world beyond our own where the expressions of the dead are awakened, and the living are enveloped.
